And if anyone would like to attempt to convince me of humankind's innate goodness, allow me to draw your attention to Exhibit A: Online role playing games.
Let me just say, I take my gaming very seriously. I would say that I am a connoisseur of fine video games. An electronic entertainment enthusiast. A console cognoscente. With that said, let it be known that I have no love or tolerance for internet RPGs.
Massively multiplayer online gaming is an abomination that exploits and corrupts any potentially enjoyable gaming experience, while simultaneously revealing the worst qualities of human nature.
To date, people have sold game money on ebay for real money; fucked up the economies on each server, making game play virtually impossible; set up real, physical sweat shops in Tiajuana to farm for rare items to sell for cash; not to mention the plain, old-school, run-of-the-mill cheating--the one hit kills, the camping, the stealing. These problems have become so rampant that the entire experience of online gaming has become one big ugly lesson in Social Darwinism. You don't even have to resort to philosophy to see what a bleak and dismal reflection of humanity this truly is. But, if you must resort to philosophizing, it seems to me to be a clear cut case of Gyges Ring syndrome. The anonymity of online RPGs allows people the freedom (in a virtual setting) to act however they want to without the fear of social retaliation or punishment. It allows people to express and act on there inner most desires without having to be held accountable for their actions. And what is it that people would most rather do under these circumstances? FUCK THE WHOLE UNIVERSE OVER.
I've proven my point.
When all of this crap was in its earliest stages of development, I knew that it was a disaster waiting to happen. It sounded really sexy with all of its perks: ongoing gameplay, realtime environments, limitless characters, yada yada. It was supposed to be the next step in gaming evolution. What these game developers failed to take into account was that people ruin every good idea, making life suck for the rest of us. And if there is anyway a buck can be made in the process, then even more of a reason to exploit everyone and destroy any glimmer of progress.
I like my games hermetic. I want to be in control at all times, not made into somebody's bitch as a result of some exploitable glitch. Most of all, I don't want to be bothered by anyone--for any reason--when I am shooting zombies or catching chocobos.
It spoils the mood.
